From a cosmetologist it is less harmful to do a color erase which only takes out part of the pigment of the hair to a red color and then re dye what color you want over that then to do a heavy highlight which strips out all of the pigment from your hair. When you highlight your hair to a light blonde it take out the protein in your hair which cause your hair to be brittle, but this is only on colored dark hair it is completely ok to highlight natural hair it will not harm it unless it is left on entirely to long. So please see about a color erase and use a good professional leave in conditioner like my fav. Lanza trauma treatment leave in.

You will have to wait until it grows out or get a color erase done at a salon but warning not good on hair and it will look ronald mcdonald red until you put your new dye on it
I want to do exactly the same with my hair I when to the salon and they told me that they recommend some highlights in auburn (a lot of them) to lighting my hair first, and after a while get the top part (the one that I want auburn) dye it.
I want to do the exact same.
I dyed my hair black about a year ago now and have re-dyed it every month since.
I want to dye my hair to a medium brown colour but was advised not to strip my hair from colour because it's bad for hair and damages it. I was told to just add loads of highlights to my hair and keep doing so until I get my wanted colour.
Ive highlighted my hair each month for 3 months now and its slowly getting lighter, but I have a way to go.

I'm doing the same thing,
What I'm doing is back to back foils (bleach) getting to a yellow/copper blonde, then putting the auburn dye over the top should go right in, then a treatment which usualy are only $15.
