If your hair has been dyed by a hairdresser and you asked for it to be lighter than the shade you have now, you can always go back and make a complaint and they can sort out the coloring professionally. This is the best way to lighten dark hair and though costly is the only sure fire way that it will be done correctly.
If not, there are a number of ways to lighten dark hair at home.
Sitting in the sun is one way to lighten hair as the rays cause it to tone done a notches.
Pantene shampoo is also rumored to lighten dark hair slightly, perhaps you could try that.
You can always be a little more risky and use hair dye yourself to try and lighten your hair a little. This is a small cost but may also be risky if you do not know what you're doing. So perhaps get a friend who knows what they are doing to help you.
You can always wash it and wait for a couple of weeks and it will naturally lighten.
You can also go to the pharmacy and buy hair color remover. This will take the color out of your hair but you may also see it as a waste of money as the cash you spent on getting your hair done has now gone down the drain.
It is hard to know what to do as there is always the chance of making your hair worse as it will be damaged. This risk you will have to take if you wish to lighten it. If not just leave it for a few weeks and it will naturally fade, which is probably the safest bet.

NEVER PUT bleach in your hair it causes horrible damage if you don't do it right. The healthiest way to lighten black hair is to get a color stripper (loreal works best for me) to get the dark color out. That leaved your hair copper colored and you should dye it a brown from there. You can't go much lighter than that for a few weeks but it won't fry your hair I change my colors all the time :]

You can lighten any hair that has been dyed by making a paste if Tide/wbleach(the powdered kind) with water wet your hair apply the paste like shampoo leave on for 5 minutes, then rinse. Make sure you use a good conditioner after rinsing. Any hair dye is drying to the hair.

Don't add bleach or a stripper. Let wash out naturally if you want healthy not dry hair. Just leave it in for a month. While you are doing that stay away from heat and keep up with your ends. So when you do color again your hair will be a healthier.

You will have to get your hair stripped, as black is the darkest colour your hair can go to. You probably won't get it that light the first time, maybe a chocolaty brown, you just have to keep trying. But wait Atleast 3 months in-between dyeing or you will ruin your hair.
