Peroxide strength is determined by the texture of hair. Usually 20 volume is sufficient unless your hair is fine textured and you just want to deposit some blonde color. If this is the case, then 10 volume will deposit the color without lifting natural color. Be sure to stay away from (ash) blondes. They will give your hair a greenish gray tone. A light natuaral blonde or golden blonde is best used on grey hair. I do not like to give info without seeing the hair.Didn't want you to ruin hair

The strenghth of developer used is based on how many levels you want your hair to be lightened and the color of your natural hair.
If you want to deposit color that is not lighter than your original color, then a 10 volume developer would be the best. That way, when the color fades, you will be left with your natural color.
Never use regular hydrogen peroxide on your hair. It is not meant for that purpose and will severly dry your hair out to the point it will become brittle and break off if left on for a long period of time or used multiple times..
If you are going one or two shades lighter, then you will need to use a 20 volume developer, but remember, after the color application fades, which will be in about 4 to 5 weeks, your natural color is going to be left with a reddish tint if your natural color is any shade of brown or black.
The only way to truly answer your question properly would be to know what your natural color is and what color you are wanting to become.
Always buy your peroxide, (developer) at a beauty supply store, but do not expect the employees to be able to answer your questions. They only work there and are not licensed professionals. I have had a few experiences of hearing beauty supply employees trying to advise people on what to purchase. I don't like to get into other peoples business, but had I not been there, the results would have been disasterous. I had to speak up or one lady would have ended up with green hair, another would have been purple. So you see, it is not really a good idea to chemically process your own hair without at least getting advice from a Cosmetologist.

Whatever you do, don't ask your pharmacist they will always tell you 40vol or 12% which is fine if you want your hair to fall out! It depends on what you are wanting to do. Deposit colour or lift? What condition is your hair in? Is it damaged or virgin hair? Do you need to do a full colour or just the regrowth? Best to ask your hairdresser.

Check with your pharmacist. I once tried to do so with regular peroxide and it didn't work.  You can purchase small bottles which indicate strength on them, but best to check with pharmacist as sometimes, peroxide must be combined with another product for proper results
