More than likely it is family history. If you are willing to pay, there is the suture process where men who bald only in the middle can have their scalp tightened. There are other methods for hair loss such as plugs or implants, check what is best for you. Mind you a lot of women go for younger guys who opt shaving their heads

Stress can sometimes cause thinning of hair in different areas of the scalp.
The red scaly patches sound like some sort of scalp disorder.
Genetic baldness in men usually comes from the mother's side of the family, but there are a few exceptions to this. Is your mother's dad balding? If not, then there is a good chance you may have a scalp this-order and it may have come on due to stress or some other factor.
Suggest you see a dermatologist to be sure.
You can also massage your scalp for five minutes daily to get the blood flowing on your scalp which will stimulate hair growth and be sure to eat a healthy diet and get the proper amount of sleep.

I suggest you go and visit your doctor to find out what the red scaly patches are. He can refer you to a tricologist and there are medicines which help prevent male hair loss.

I would see a dermatologist just because of the red scaly patches, could have eczema or something else that may be causing your hair loss.
