Hair developer expires and is also extremely flammable. You should always take care when you have this in your home and make sure that you store it in a cool dry place. Make sure that you check the expiry date on the bottle or box and make sure that you are using it as you should be.

Here are a few tips to think about when storing hair color developer;

  • Make sure that once opened you keep the developer in a cool dry place that will not be exposed to extreme light. The light will make the hair color developer change chemical make up and this could result in the hair color developer becoming volatile and exploding.
  • Always throw away the hair color developer once it has been mixed with the hair color. These come separate in the box and then you mix them just before you use them. When mixed together they become more flammable and likely to explode so do make sure that you have thrown away any leftover hair color you have after using it.
  • Do follow the instructions and do not mix the developer with anything that it should not be mixed with.
  • Do not place near extreme heat or fire. This will make the hair color developer go on fire.
You should always make sure that when using hair color you follow the instructions and do not subject yourself to anything flammable when the color is on your head such as bonfires, cigarettes, or cooking on a gas stove.

Hair color does not take too long to develop so do wait until you have finished your hair before doing any of these things and always read the label.

If you keep it stored  in a cool, dark area, such as a cabinet, it can last a very long time, but yes, it does expire, as well as any other chemical such as hair color and perm solutions.
