Should employers refuse applicants a job because they have tattoos or piercings? Isn't that discrimination?

Yes, it is discrimination - and when I was interviewing people for a job, I chose to discriminate against people who turned up for an interview looking "scruffy". Tattoos and (especially) piercings almost always look a bit scruffy. If you want me to offer you a job, turn up looking smart, neat and tidy and suitable to deal with my customers. Tattoos don't help and piercings are a complete nono.

That's not discrimination. These people chose to get these things and look like freaks. I hate to see people with exotic piercings.
Tattoos can be ok if the person is willing to cover them up when at work. A lot of police and military personnel have body art.

I think it really depends what job you're applying for and how visible, ridiculous, and/or offensive your tattoos/piercings are. Image can make a huge difference when it comes to how people view you and take you seriously when you're on the job.  To some employers your tattoos (if really visible/obvious) or your piercings might detract from how professional you will look on the job and I don't blame them for taking that into account when they're interviewing you.
