So I tried to pierce my lip myself and now it's really swollen. I don't have a ring in because it wouldn't go through, I figured I would let it close and try again later or go to a professional. What should I do? Does that mean it's infected?

Like any open wound, a piercing is susceptible to infection, whether you put jewellery in it or not.

The best aftercare is to:

  1. Wash the area out regularly with a hot water and sea salt solution
  2. Keep it dry
  3. Don't play with it

Piercing your lip yourself is not recommended for a number of reasons.

One is that, you're probably not using sterile equipment in a sterile environment, which means your chances of getting an infection are greater.

Follow the steps above, and when it's healed - go see a pro.

If the area starts getting discolored or producing pus, then you should see a doctor.
