Does It Hurt To Get Your Belly Button Pierced?

Getting your ears pierced for the first time can be scary but there is little to fear from this simple process.  In one sense, yes, it will hurt a little bit; but on the other hand, it’s no worse than a tetanus shot and generally lasts about as long.  For those of you too young to remember your first tetanus shot, it might equate to stubbing your toe or smacking your thumb with a mallet.  If you take your thumb and middle fingers and pinch your ear lobe for about 15 seconds really hard & let go, that’s about the extent of the initial pain.  Where having your ears pierced can become painful is if they are not cared for properly or you have an allergic reaction to the metals of the earrings themselves.

In most states, piercings are regulated by some form of local or state agency and have minimum standards and age limitations that they must adhere to.  Trained professionals are readily available in almost every mall in America.  Piercings are also done in tattoo parlors and nail or beauty salons across the country.  All types of piercings require specific care and maintenance to help them heal properly and not become infected.  All professional piercing personnel will give their clients written care instructions along with their receipt and other purchases.  Following these instructions will be the key to maintaining your piercing.  Infection can lead to serious complications and could result in having to allow the piercing to heal closed.

Allergic reactions are another consideration when dealing with a new piercing.  Certain individuals can be allergic to the gold or silver or even the surgical steel starter posts.  Poor quality or simple allergy both exhibit the same symptoms so it could be hard to tell at first which you are experiencing.
While the initial piercings are only mildly uncomfortable, any infection or allergic reaction can cause pain for you.

Not as much as you would think.  I took my girlfriend to get hers done and was in the room with her.  When the guy was dotting it in order to make sure he had the holes strait she tensed up and closed her eyes.  He told her to look in the mirror to make sure it was strait.  She laughed because she thought he was piercing it.  When she came back over he asked her a question and while she was answering he stuck the needle through.  Before she even realized what he was doing he already had the ring in it.

Everyone has a different tolerance for pain. Personally mine didn't hurt all that much . The thing that hurt the most for me was the clamp a little bit ,and when they pull the needle out to put the ring through. And for my sister she didnt even know it happened. The only thing that hurt her was like a day after when it was sore for her to bend.

Right I got my naval pierced like 5 minutes ago and I came on here to tell all of you not to worry at all. I'm the biggest chicken I know I complain about any pain at all, I went in to have it done about a year ago but chickened out and it doesnt hurt one bit! I swear! I didnt even know when he'd done it, I was waiting for the pain, looked up and it was done :S honestly it looks so cute now, its totally awesome doesnt hurt one bit :) the clamp stops it from hurting as well :) when you have the clamp on it might as well be over :) you should all defo go for it if you want it, and also if you have hair on your stomach... Don't SWEAT IT it looks amazing and totally takes away the attention, if you have dark hair on your stomach then try bleaching it? X good luck to everyone :) keep it clean ! :) x I'm so happy about mine ;)

I'm sixteen & I got my bellybutton pierced yesterday. I already have my nose pierced too. I got it done professionally, took two seconds. They put a mark where they will put the needle, then you lie down & you don't feel the needle going in, but then he or she will put a tube through the whole, thats a little stingy but not painful. And you don't feel the bar being put in. You should keep the bar in 4-6 weeks & you feel it bandaged till you go to bed that night. I can move my bar up and down already & sleep on it, and do my usual exercising. Just always remember to take care of it, I use feel antiseptic wound spray with cotton buds. Good luck.

Yeah, it does. However, a lot of people report only a slight stinging feeling AFTERWARDS for a few seconds. After that, it swells a bit and turns pinkish reddish. Its totally normal, and in the healing process. On a scale of 1-10 ; 1 being 100% painless and 10 being 100% painful. -From all my friends that got it done, I'd only say about 2 & 1/2. You have nothing to worry about, darling. :]

I guess we're all different but when I had mine done it hurt a lot.  And there was no numbing, that would just be another needle to have to endure.  The process is over fairly quickly but the piercing site itself is tender and sore for a month or more after.  It can get infected very easy especially if you don't take extra care in tending to it during the healing process.  The "piercer" should give you detailed instructions on what to use on it and what not to do.  It can take a whole year for it to completely heal so you can change the jewelry too.  I don't agree that you should drink alcohol before you get it done.  You could bleed more or even be more sensative to the pain or nervous feelings you already have.

Hi! I am 13, 14 in 19 days, and I just got it done. I asked the guy not to tell me when he was putting the needle through. I went to a place where they didn't use a clamp, most places do. It is okay without the clamp. The clamp is what hurts, that pinches your skin and can cause more bleeding and discharge. Without it, they will first massage the naval, then pierce the needle through. You definitely feel a little jab. It isn't pain, though, more like pressure. However, it does hurt afterwards. Any body who tells you it doesn't is trying to not make you scared. It isn't a severe pain, but it definitely hurts. Good luck!

I wouldnt say it really hurts, just a little. If you go to a piercing place, the piercer will probably be really nice and talk you through it, it really calms you down when they talk you though it, and if you are worrying and stressing about it, it will probably be worse.

I had my belly button pierced about a week ago, and it hurt a little bit more than getting your ear pierced does. It didn't hurt even a 10th of how bad my industrial hurt. But it was worth it, it looks cute, and it doesn't hurt a lot or take too long.

They clamp the skin really tight so that it you can barely feel the needle going in. All you feel is a lot of pressure but not pain.

If you are afraid of the pain when getting your belly button pierced, you may have to drink. I believe the pain will start to feel like that medicine dentists put in your mouth before a needle.

Lol don't do it drunk, professionals won't let you anyway and you shouldn't do it yourself because of all the arteries. I had mine done and I'm a wuss but it didn't hurt me at all, they numbed it and that just tickled and made me laugh :)

Its like scissors, but it has flat things at the end, and a hole (where the needle goes through.)
And they get the bit where you want the piercing and then they get the clamp and then they put the skin inbetween and then they shut the clamp and then the skin is trapped inbetween the slides. It is squeezing the skin...(getting mine done in 17 days :)...)

I had my friend do it cause she did it for herself she said she passed out from the pain. I cried and screamed it was like I was giving birth. But it was totally worth it cause I wanted since I was 8 and I am about 15 now. If you do do it get it done professionally. And take really good care of it. Oh and please don't be scared by me and my friends reactions when we pierced it we used safety pins and we didn't numb it first.

Hey, I'm 15 and I got my belly button pierced about a year and 3 months ago, it doesnt really hurt when you get it pierced, the worst part is the anxiety or nervousness you feel when its about to happen. The standard belly button piercing is a 14 gauge which isn't really that big, after you get it pierced it will be sore but as long as you properly care for it the pain wont be that bad and I personally think the small amount of pain was well worth it. :)

The very nature of pain is relative to ones own pain threshold
My partner found it really painful agony even
A friend of mine didn't gasp or cringe once
Ive tattoos which I find painful but its a type of pain I enjoy having
When I asked my partner to choose which was worse a blinding migraine or a belly button piercing she  looked at me as if I was crazy and said the piercing as its over a lot quicker and certainly not as excrutiating as a migrain
Just be careful your going to an established business with a good reputation of cleanliness
