A dimple is a visible indentation in the flesh that forms on people’s cheeks or chin when they smile or speak. A single dimple on the cheek is rare (although this can happen) and are usually found on both cheeks, as seen on celebrities like Kirsten Dunst and Cheryl Cole. Although many think they are cute and attractive, dimples are actually a birth defect where the facial muscle, zygomaticus major, is shorter than normal. Therefore, it tags at the skin when the person smiles or speaks; causing a depression in the skin i.e. Dimple or dimples It is believed that dimples are genetically inherited. Studies found that children have a higher chance of getting them if it runs in the family. However, a person can be born with them even if there is no genetic connection with dimples within the family. Dimples can also be caused by excessive fat on someone’s face. This is especially associated with youth i.e. Baby fat but they tend to disappear once the excessive fat goes away. Some women complain about ‘dimples’ or a ‘bumpy surface’ around their buttock area. This dimple-like effect is commonly known as cellulite or orange peel and is classed as unsightly. There are many ways to combat ‘dimples’ on the buttocks by eating healthier meals and doing regular exercise that targets the area. The facial indent is desired by some females in cultures such as Asia where dimples are a sign of beauty. Even if you are not born with them, evolution of plastic surgery means that it is possible to ‘fake’ one. The process is a simple one and is performed while the patient is under local anaesthetic. Thirty minutes is all that is needed to achieve a dimple and normal activities can be resumed straight away.
Dimples are indentations of the skin. These visible indentations are caused by the underlying flesh. They are mostly seen on both the cheeks of most people who have them, but it is quite common for some people to have dimples on just one of their cheeks. A dimple on the chin cause people to have a cleft chin. A majority of men have cleft chins, though it is not common in women to have a cleft chin. Actors Kirk Douglas, Michael Douglas and the late Cary Grant are some celebrities who have or had cleft chins.
Dimples are genetically inherited. They are a dominant trait. They usually occur because some muscles in certain areas of the face of a person are shorter than those in others. Dimples are commonly associated with the youth and babies, though the dimples of babies become less prominent or less noticeable when they grow older as the muscles get longer.

I think dimples are caused by variations in the structure of the facial muscle known as zygomaticus major.I don`t know whether it has relation with heredity..coz I`ve dimple on my left cheek but no one other in my family `ve dimples....!!!!
Dimples are also caused by a failed complete growth of facial muscles. This can lead to a person having dimples throughout their life. I have them, as well as a clef chin (which is typically caused from a jaw bone that never fully fused together.)
Well my friend got dimples frm playing the trumpet, he didnt have dimples until he started to play that insrument
You are born with them.
