Deodorants are for masking odor and use chemicals to neutralize odor.
Antiperspirants are for stopping wetness. If there is no wetness, there can be no odor, since the odor is produced by bacteria festering in the warm and moist condition of the armpit or foot, etc.
Clinical strength or prescription strength products are for "super-sweaters" or people with "super-odor". They typically last longer than 24 hours. One such product, Klima Deodorant, actually lasts for 5 days - even through showers.
Antiperspirant/deodorants are a combination of the two products.
