In Victorian England what people were popularly called robins because of their red uniforms?

It's because of their red uniforms. 

Robins are birds that have distinguishing red feathers on their chests - so that's where the name comes from.

The color red is considered royal, which is why postmen in the UK originally wore this color. They will continue to do so I imagine, even if the postal service is privatized.
