No such thing as a 'safe' chemical treatment of any kind for the hair, esp. For straightening!!!!! I have very coarse hair and straightened my hair many years ago; both myself and at a salon...one trick I learned is that before you apply the straightening product, take any setting or styling GEL and run it thru your hair; just a little on the palm of your hands, rub hands together, and rub thru....this will keep the straightener from working too quickly and give you some relief from the pain!! Of the chemical working on your scalp, that is!!! And it helps to keep the hair intact and not break so easily...afterwards, it goes without saying that you want to condition condition condition your hair...I liked my hair when it'd been straightened!! And when it started to grow back in, up to about five weeks, it got a nice wave to it; but of course after that, it was back to the coarse, kinky stuff!!!

Many chemicals are used to straighten the hairs like sodium hydroxide (Lye) and guanidine hydroxide (no-lye). Among these 2, lye can be damaging to scalp and hairs if not applied correctly. No lye can be irritating for the scalp. So both chemicals can have their own advantages and disadvantages.
