It's largely due to the concept created by the media over a ridiculously long time, that stereotypically 'beautiful' women are of a higher status and should be more greatly desired than others.

I would approach him in an open way to talk about it. In a light hearted manner at first so that his guard is down and he should be more willing to discuss the situation than if you angrily confront him.
