I think it's because in certain countries, especially ones with a European colonial past, skin tone is heavily associated with social class, so it has become ingrained in those cultures that it is desirable to have lighter skin.

Ironically, most typical European high streets now contain one or more tanning salons.

It seems like noone is happy with the way they look...

Lots of people have darker skin in certain areas of their body and they want lighten it up but by rights that is all natural color. And then some people who are naturally dark complected want be lighter skin. Now it all goes different ways . Well for myself I'm not messing up with what Mother Nature gave me that's the way I see things.

I'm so pale I'm see through! I know it's normal to see your veins in your arms, but sometimes my hands and feet turn purple. And I just know i wouldn't look purple if I had a tan. And my legs look all speckled because of the veins. I wish they were just one solid color! It's really hard for me to get a decent tan. I do get pretty drastic tan lines, but I'm still very fair in the summer. I also burn like crazy. I have to actually follow the directions on the sunscreen bottle, and reapply every two hours.

But my biggest problem is whenever I smile, I get crazy blush. No matter how many times it has happened, my friends still think I'm sick or something. Oh well hopefully I'll have better luck tanning this summer.

But it's true, skin lightening is really popular. I don't approve of it, but I think it's a better trend than fake tans.
