How about highlighting with blonde and a caramel color? I think those colors would look very nice with your hair.....then you get an idea of how you would look with lighter hair without committing completely!
Would it be odd to go from brunette to a light blonde? I really want to dye my hair blonde but I'm not sure if it would look right or not.

The only way you gonna know is if you try it.. If you don't like it. You can always dye it back.
As long as you understand the consequences. To change hair colour from dark to light it has to be stripped of it's colour so the colour you have chosen with 'deposit' on the hair shaft. It is a chemical process .. And is VERY hard on hair. It doesn't always turn out like the photo on the box...and if you decide to do something so extreme .. I STRONGLY advise getting a professional to do it.
You can not .. I repeat can not just simply take a box colour off the shelf and apply it to dark hair in hopes of getting a lighter colour. It just simply doesn't work that way. You HAVE to understand how colours work and how they mix. Even the texture of your hair will affect how colours with be absorbed.
change it slowly to a lighter tint each time.
